Bones Season 12 Episode 1: “The Hope In The Horror” Review

This section of the review is spoiler FREE.

Having been a long time fan of Bones since it first aired in the UK back in 2006, I was a little saddened and even heartbroken to find it was on its final season. Waiting for season 12 to start was horrible because on the one hand you want your favourite show to start back again, but on the other hand, you don’t want to get any closer to it ending.

If you would like to recap on what happened in season 11 you can read about it here and here.

The first episode back was a good one. It carried on straight after the season 11 finale and managed to wrap up that story line pretty well while also opening up doors for future stories. Like we saw at the end of season 11 Zack Addy, played by Eric Millegan, returned to the show. Zack was a main character in seasons 1-3 and guest starred in 4 and 5 before returning at the end of 11 and guest starring this season.

Zack was by far one of my favourite characters of the show and to see him return for the final season was so exciting! Every time we got a new season I prayed he would come back, even just once and now that’s finally happening. If you remember Zack and are also a fan of his, don’t worry, its story in this episode is a good one and you won’t be disappointed at all.

During this episode alone we get to see everyone use their strengths to come together and solve the case. The intern this week is Wendell, and once again he proves to be one of the most lovable characters on the show.

Overall it was an entertaining and strong opening for the season and it seems like the rest is going to follow suit. They did a good job at filling in the blanks (about Zack) for those who might not have remembered, or who might have come into the show late, but they also don’t make it too repetitive for those who remember. It genuinely just made it feel a little nostalgic.

If you’ve seen the episode feel free to continue reading on, if you haven’t, then I hope you enjoy the first episode, and feel free to return once you’ve seen it!

Nerve (2016) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

Nerve is a 2016 thriller, crime, and adventure film based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Jeanne Ryan. It revolves around an online game in which people can sign up to be “players” or “watchers”, the former are given dares to do by the latter and as the movie goes on the dares become more intense.

The movie is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, produced by Allison Shearmur, and the screenplay is by Jessica Sharzer. It stars Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Juliette Lewis, and others. More information can be found here.

This movie was a huge surprise! I remember seeing the trailer and being interested and wanting to see it, but I never expected it to be as good as it actually is. I would honestly re-watch it again, and I would definitely say it’s one of my favourite movies of the year, maybe even of all time.

Arrival (2016) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

Arrival is a 2016 drama, mystery, and science-fiction movie based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. After 12 mysterious spacecrafts come to Earth linguist, Dr Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams), is recruited by the military to try and communicate with the aliens onboard one of the spacecrafts.

The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve, and produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Aaron Ryder, and David Linde. The screenplay is written by Eric Heisserer, and the movie stars: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma, among others.

Having got out of the cinema a few hours ago I can still safely say that I’m very glad I saw this movie! From the moment I saw the first trailer I was intrigued, and that intrigue was still there when I was sat in my seat watching it. Arrival is more about the story than the action. In fact there’s only a teeny bit of action, but for the most part, there isn’t any because it never relies on it, and it honestly doesn’t need to.

Don’t Breathe (2016) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

A 2016 horror movie about three thieves who break into a blind man’s house in the hopes of leaving with a large amount of cash, only to find that the man isn’t as helpless as he seems.

Directed by Fede Alvarez. Produced by Fede Alvarez, Sam Raimi, and Robert Tapert. Written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Starring Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and Stephen Lang.

You can find more info here.

Don’t Breathe has a solid opening. It does enough to tell you about the trio of thieves and set the scene without using up too much of its time. We are given just enough to not want anything to happened to these characters. You’ll like and root for at least one of the trio.

The movie does a solid job of creating an atmosphere. It does this in many ways. With the lack of light (or minimal light), the ambience and music, and the way the cameras move. There’s a lot of moments where the camera will shift and suddenly there will be a character standing there or something will have changed.
