Bones Season 12 Episode 12: ‘The End in the End’ Review

This post contains SPOILERS.

We have finally reached the end of Bones. As someone who has watched the show since it first aired in the UK back in early 2005/2006, it feels strange to think that it will no longer be on. I know there are going to be countless occassions in the near future where I’ll wonder when the next season is going to be on and if there’s any news, only to realise that there’s never going to be another season. It’s going to get some getting used to, but oh boy, this was a fantastic way for the show to go out.

Also, a little fun fact, David Boreanz who plays Seeley Booth direced this episode!

After the literal explosive ending of last week’s episode, it was truly heartbreaking to see the lab completely destroyed like that. The music and fading of clips really did make me want to cry.  When we pick up with Angela, Hodgins, and Booth there are some things I really did appreciate: Hodgins calling for Angela, both of them worrying about the baby, Booth immediately calling for, and searching for, Brennan, and Angela helping Hodgins get in to his chair, but then seemingly letting him navigate his own way because for the most part he can handle himself. In fact, we do see him get around all by himself throughout the entire episode.

Seeing everyone working full force at the FBI was more impactful because of Aubrey’s worry. The little added detail of Caroline showing up and looking after Christine and Hank so that Aubrey could go and investigate was a great little touch.

Moving back to the lab I loved how Booth was shouting “Bones,” Angela was shouting “Brennan,” and Hodings was shouting “Doctor B.” Those are names we’ve all seen them use before in reference to Brennan, in fact, it’s the names they tend to use the most. So to see them shouting them and frantically looking made the scene even better.

Seeing the destruction from the outside was actually really shocking. Maybe it was because that portion of the lab was shut down, but I never really considered how massive the explosion must have been and the effects it would have had on the building as a whole. It made me worry a lot about the other people, sure they got out, but did they get far enough away in time? Seeing Cam and Arastoo helped to put my mind at ease a lot. They looked a little roughed up, but nothing major.

Booth finding Brennan was such a strong moment. He had been so quick and rough to move the rubble and such out of the way, but the second he gets to her he’s soft and gentle. The way he calls her “Temperance” and then reverts back to saying “Bones”, it showed the seriousness of the situation and added much more emotion. Then we get to the moment that made me start to cry. That’s right, tears, even before the credits started rolling.

Seeing Brennan’s obvious fear at the fact that she felt different and couldn’t remember the significance of the words she had written down honestly broke me a little. One of the things Brennan has always taken pride in his her brain. It was clear in that scene that something wasn’t right and because of her lack of remembering, it was most likely to do with her brain. Seeing her so worried, and the others also being concerned, really got to me.

Bones Season 12 Episode 11: ‘The Day in the Life’ Review

This post contains SPOILERS.

We’re almost at the end, can you believe it? I certainly can’t. Thanks to breaks we’re only about a week behind the U.S. so hopefully it’ll be easy to avoid spoilers until the finale. Although I will say this, I’ve heard some amazing things about the last episode and generally, everyone seems to have enjoyed it which is really great to hear!

It wasn’t too much of a surprise when there was a cliffhanger at the end. It makes sense to have a two-part finale, especially considering this is the last time. Going in I knew there was some kind of explosion and at first, I half-expected it to be at Cam and Arastoo’s wedding, but I was really happy it wasn’t and that we were able to keep that bit of happiness.

The format with the episode with all the different points of view was interesting. There were a couple of times where it took me a moment to realise where we were on the timeline of events, but it never lasted long and generally the episode was pretty easy to follow. I liked how each point of view gave a key bit of information to the overall story and it also meant we got to focus on the lives of several characters.

Bones Season 12 Episode 10: ‘The Radioactive Panthers in the Party ’ Review

This post contains SPOILERS.

Admittedly, going into this episode I’d seen some people’s reactions floating around. Some didn’t seem impressed, and out of those, I know a few weren’t particularly happy with where Wendell’s story line went. Going in I was concerned that I too wouldn’t enjoy this episode quite as much as I’ve been enjoying this season, but luckily that wasn’t the case, at least not entirely.

I would by no means say this is the best season, but it is still very good. I would perhaps say that this episode was the weakest of the season so far, but it’s definitely not terrible. Although I’m saddened by the fact that Wendell is contemplating what he’s doing and the season/series as a whole seems to be ending with him not doing his dissertation, I’m happy with how they went about it.

Bones Season 12 Episode 9: ‘The Steal in the Wheels’ Review

This post contains SPOILERS.

This week we’re back to the Zack story line and I couldn’t be happier. The second the “previously on” started playing and we saw scenes involving Zack from episode 1 and episode 6 I couldn’t contain my excitement. I do feel a little disappointed that we still haven’t seen him again, however, it was nice to go back to his story in this episode nonetheless.

Seeing Hodgins’ frustration while working on Zack’s case was actually rather upsetting. I kept thinking back to old seasons where we would see the two of them together, and it really made this episode all the more powerful. You can also see the frustration and high emotions in other characters too with this case being so close to home, but it was nice that it was mostly from Hodgins’, especially after the last batch of evidence he gathered had to be thrown out/dismissed.

Gordon Wyatt is back. It was great to see him again! I forgot how much fun he was to have around. The fact that he made himself at home made me laugh so much. It looked so cosy and I loved the little focus on bobblehead Bobby, something I’m glad is still a feature of the show. He made watching the footage of the car crash even more entertaining because it’s clear he’s not used to that sort of thing, and he reacted how I assume a lot of people would. In fact, his interactions with everyone were fun, but also incredibly insightful, especially when it came to Brennan’s grief and Zack’s case.

Bones Season 12 Episode 8: ‘The Grief and the Girl’ Review

This post contains SPOILERS.

After the end of last week’s episode it was unsurprising that this one would feel a little heavy. That opening shot with the fridge was 1) a pretty cool way of starting the episode, and 2) threw us into everything in a very simple way. The fact that we got more clarification on that opening through a conversation between Booth and Brennan made it seem so natural and provided us with the information we needed without it being to expositional.

Right from the start, a tone is set. Booth and Brennan aren’t strangers to fights or being distant from each other, it’s one of the things that makes their relationship so great to watch – they’re not perfect. However, it is always unsettling, so to see Brennan avoiding Booth and not wanting to talk it him, just added to the overall feeling of sadness that the episode gave off.

This continues on throughout the episode, but it was nice to see at the end that it was nothing personal, that in fact, Brennan was worried about Booth’s feelings. It was nice to see them have that much-needed conversation and for them to be by each other’s side again in time for the funeral.
