Becky (2020) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

While I may not have been the one to pick Becky to watch, I ended up having such a good time with it! The movie follows Becky (Lulu Wilson) whose weekend with her dad at the family lakehouse suddenly turns violent when some escaped prisoners come looking for something.

At its core, this is a revenge movie so there are definitely familiar elements that are expected of that genre but Becky makes one major change in that it has a 13-year-old at the centre of it. Now, that fact does not mean the violence is turned down because it most certainly isn’t. There’s still lots of blood and gore and death throughout. Her age does not really alter the typical rampage you would expect from the main character seeking revenge on those who harmed her (and/or the people she loves) although, because she is so young, her tactics and the overall approach to the storyline are altered to fit that detail.

Speed (1994) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

“Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do?

I watched Speed a few times as a kid but it had been a while so when the opportunity arose, I couldn’t resist a rewatch. From what I remember, I did enjoy my pasting viewings but this time around, I had a particularly great and fun time.

For those who are unaware, this movie follows Los Angeles SWAT cop Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) who has to deal with a bomb on a bus that can’t go below 50 mph otherwise it’ll explode. It’s such a simple concept but it works so well. It’s an action-packed, entertaining watch that does a fantastic job at keeping the viewers’ attention from beginning to end.

Morbius (2022) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

[Header Image: Jared Leto as Michael Morbius | Sony Pictures Releasing]

The overwhelmingly negative response I’ve seen for this movie has been partially hilarious to witness. Let’s make it simple, is Morbius worth spending money on in order to see it on the big screen? Perhaps not. I saw it at the cinema and I certainly don’t regret it but, unfortunately, there’s nothing particularly special or stand-out-ish about it, so skipping the trip and watching it in the comfort of your home won’t result in any feelings of missing out.

The Raid 2 (2014) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

“No… I’m done.”

This post contains potential spoilers for the first movie!

There was a moment after I finished The Raid where I wasn’t sure if I was immediately going to go straight into the sequel — mostly because it’s almost an hour longer (giving both movies a combined run time of 4 hours and 10 minutes) — but in the end, I was just too intrigued to see where the story went and I’m really glad I didn’t put it off.

Taking place several hours after the first movie, The Raid 2 continues to follow Rama (Iko Uwais) as he goes undercover, joining a powerful crime syndicate in order to expose corrupt members of his force.

Similarly to its predecessor, The Raid 2 is an intense watch with even more going on this time around. While this one would certainly not exist without the first movie, I have to admit that The Raid 2 is my favourite. While there were some standout moments and things from The Raid that I loved, it definitely felt like I got more out of the sequel. If you’re reading this review, you’ve most likely seen the first movie, so you’ve probably got at least some idea of what you’re getting yourself into. However, that being said, there are some significant changes this time around.

The Raid (2011) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

“Our mission is simple: we go in, and we take him out!”

This movie has been on my to-watch list for at least 4 years now and I finally got around to watching it. Throughout that time, I kept coming across people recommending it as a must-see movie and while I don’t consider it a top-tier favourite by any means, it was certainly worth the hype and I’m pleased I finally got around to it.

Set in Jakarta (Indonesia), an elite SWAT team attempt to infiltrate a rundown apartment block that is used as a safe house by various criminals and is seen as untouchable. Their task is to take down the notorious drug lord who runs the building, however, trapped on the sixth floor, the team have to fight their way through.
