“Do all lovers feel they’re inventing something?”

Yesterday, I logged onto MUBI to find that they had Portrait of a Lady on Fire available to watch, a movie that was very high up on my watchlist last year and I have to say, I’m so happy I finally got to see it and that it was even better than I ever thought it would be.

Long Shot (2019) | Movie Review

“It’s ‘Pretty Woman’, but she’s Richard Gere and you’re Julia Roberts.”

This post contains minor spoilers.

I can’t express how happy I am that Long Shot was the first movie I watched in 2020 because I had the best time with it. Ever since the first trailer dropped, I was intrigued and I’m pleased to say that it didn’t disappoint.

I’ve been a fan of Charlize Theron for such a long time so that instantly grabbed my attention but then the movie seemed genuinely hilarious and interesting. As for Seth Rogen, I’ve seen him in a few other movies and shows he’s been involved in over the years but I have to admit, I’m not as well acquainted with him. That being said, I was definitely intrigued to see both of them on screen together. And I have to say, I adored watching them and I would love to see them act together again in the future.

Hustlers (2019) | Movie Review (Spoiler Free)

“We were fucking hurricanes, weren’t we?”

From the moment the first trailer for Hustlers dropped, I was intrigued and I’m so happy to say that it did not disappoint. This entire movie was a blast. I genuinely had the best time watching it and I can honestly say that it was all done incredibly well.

Hustlers is based on the article The Hustlers at Scores by Jessica Pressler meaning there was at least some kind of jumping off point. Even so, I would say the movie does a pretty fantastic job at bringing the essence of that article to the big screen while also creating something that you can follow even if have never heard the story before. Hustlers sucks you in from the very beginning and keeps your attention without really having to try. Whether it be the performances, the slight shift in tone between present day and the past, or even something as simple as the music, at the end of the day there’s always something to focus on and keep you entertained.

Fractured (2019) | Movie Review

This post contains spoilers.

I wanted to love this movie – it looked super entertaining from the trailer and the cast is pretty great (although their talent wasn’t really utilised) – but unfortunately, I ended up not really liking it at all. I’ll say this, it does pass some time. There are some fairly intense scenes and moments that capture your interest enough to make it feel like it’s not a total waste of time but ultimately, it’s pretty disappointing.

Joker (2019) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

“My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face. She told me I had a purpose: to bring laughter and joy to the world.”

Prior to its release, Joker already had a ton of things going for it that made me excited to see it and thankfully, it did deliver on those things but I have to admit that for the most part, I was wildly underwhelmed. Before I really jump into this review, I would still say that it’s worth checking out. However, I wouldn’t say you’re missing out too much if you have to wait to see it and don’t get the chance to do so at the cinema.
