Morbius (2022) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

The overwhelmingly negative response I’ve seen for this movie has been partially hilarious to witness. Let’s make it simple, is Morbius worth spending money on in order to see it on the big screen? Perhaps not. I saw it at the cinema and I certainly don’t regret it but, unfortunately, there’s nothing particularly special or stand-out-ish about it, so skipping the trip and watching it in the comfort of your home won’t result in any feelings of missing out.

I Am Mother (2019) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

This one was definitely a surprise. When it first popped up on Netflix it caught my attention because it was clearly a sci-fi movie, a genre I’m always interested in checking out. Recently, I decided to look a little further into it and after discovering the plot, I finally decided to sit down and watch it. I’ll be honest and say I’m still a little unsure of how I feel about it entirely but I’m definitely glad I checked it out. It’s completely worth it.

The overall premise isn’t necessarily groundbreaking but it is explored and executed in really interesting ways. I Am Mother follows a teenage girl known as daughter (Clara Rugaard) who is raised by a robot – Mother (Luke Hawker, voiced by Rose Byrne) – following an extinction of mankind, however, one day a stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives. The movie is really well paced, albeit a little slow on a couple of occasions, and the overall structure of it is easy to follow even with the many twists and turns along the way. It doesn’t overcomplicate anything and while it is an ambitious movie, it never gets too over the top. That being said, there’s always something going on even if some scenes are very tame.

Arrival (2016) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

Arrival is a 2016 drama, mystery, and science-fiction movie based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. After 12 mysterious spacecrafts come to Earth linguist, Dr Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams), is recruited by the military to try and communicate with the aliens onboard one of the spacecrafts.

The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve, and produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Aaron Ryder, and David Linde. The screenplay is written by Eric Heisserer, and the movie stars: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma, among others.

Having got out of the cinema a few hours ago I can still safely say that I’m very glad I saw this movie! From the moment I saw the first trailer I was intrigued, and that intrigue was still there when I was sat in my seat watching it. Arrival is more about the story than the action. In fact there’s only a teeny bit of action, but for the most part, there isn’t any because it never relies on it, and it honestly doesn’t need to.
